Internal Medicine Residency Program

This three-year program is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Internal Medicine. Eight Categorical Internal Medicine (3-year program) and four Preliminary (1-year program) positions are available. Residents are Board eligible for certification in Internal Medicine upon completion of the Categorical program.

We emphasize the human aspects of medicine through direct patient care and the academic aspects through daily teaching rounds, conferences and research. Ambulatory patient care is provided by the Internal Medicine Center of Akron (IMCA). Senior residents are given responsibility for patient care, including admission decisions in conjunction with supportive Board-Certified teaching faculty. Training facilities include the Heart & Vascular Center; which is the only accredited Chest Pain Center in Summit County. At the Heart & Vascular Center, the latest in research, diagnostic testing and treatment is provided by the use of cardiac catheterizations, intravascular ultrasound, and percutaneous revascularization including intra-coronary stents, balloon angioplasty and intra-vascular radiation therapy. The McDowell Cancer Center is the largest inpatient unit in the area providing patients with access to the newest therapies, diagnostics, and surgical techniques to minimize side effects and improve outcomes. Our participation in 90 national clinical trials offers treatment alternatives that extend and improve lives. The recently dedicated Beatrice K. and C. Blake McDowell, Jr. Cancer Center is the latest addition to the Cancer program at Akron General providing centralized chemotherapy and infusion services in the outpatient setting. In addition to these Centers of Excellence, Akron General has training facilities in our hemodialysis unit, hyperbaric oxygen chamber, neurology lab, endoscopy lab, pulmonary function lab, respiratory therapy and sleep lab, MRI, CT and Pet scans as well as ultrasonography. We have active reperfusion teams and stroke team protocols allowing us to serve as a referral center for many of the area hospitals.

Formal lectures, case presentations, morbidity/mortality conference and conferences in basic science, pathology and radiology are integral parts of the Internal Medicine program. Monthly Journal Club, medical ethics and practice management conferences round out the didactic portion of the program. Residents have special Board review conferences regularly in order to better prepare for the certifying examination.

Research participation is required during the three-year program. Protected research time and additional funding is available to support resident research. A full-time Ph.D coordinator in the Department of Medicine will work closely with you to help identify and develop your research project in addition to the other faculty from our Kenneth Calhoun Research Laboratory. Each year many of our residents are selected for presentations at local, state or national meetings.
