Objectives:
- To provide an opportunity for the medical student to witness the initial presentation of critically ill patients into the healthcare delivery system.
- To provide a knowledge base for identifying those patients with serious diseases that require immediate medical or surgical intervention.
- To learn the diagnostic approaches to specific patient complaints, as well as the management of specific emergencies.
- To provide exposure to urgent medical problems through initial evaluation under the supervision of residency-trained, board-certified emergency physicians.
Description:
- Work with critically ill and injured patients as they initially present into the healthcare delivery system.
- Be exposed to a wide variety of pathology, including orthopaedic, surgical, traumatic, psychiatric and medical emergencies.
- Obtain a better understanding of the clinical knowledge and skills necessary to initiate treatment of patients with life-threatening circumstances.
- Evaluation of patients during this rotation will encompass all medical specialties, with emphasis on managing the most seriously ill patients first and managing several patients simultaneously.
- Exposure to the delivery of prehospital care is offered through “riding time” with the Akron Fire Department EMS system.
- Didactic conferences are held every weekday, with 5 hour extensive in-depth EM Resident Conferences held weekly.
- Scheduling of shifts is executed through the medical student coordinator and typically is designed to give the student maximum exposure to patient contact.
- For the student interested in a career in Emergency Medicine, the EM senior elective provides an excellent opportunity to learn about a well-established, community hospital-based residency program firsthand. For those with other interests, the rotation offers extensive clinical experience to a wide variety of disease entities.
Night Call/Special Requirements: Night shifts can be expected. Previous ACLS exposure would be helpful but not required.
Additions/Comments: Additional rotation components: EMS ride-along program and in service exam. Ride along with MedFlight offered. Due to a required orientation in Emergency Medicine, it is desirable that students begin their rotation on the first business day of the month.
