Questions and Answers about the REALIZE Adjustable Gastric Band

1. What is the difference between the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System and the REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band?
Realize Gastric Banding procedureThe REALIZE Band has a softer balloon that fits around the stomach that is made of strong, flexible silicone. The port, which your surgeon will use to make adjustments, has a bigger target area and a unique application system for ease of insertion in the operating room. Only the REALIZE Band comes with the REALIZE mySUCCESS™ program, which is an online support program that provides support to help patients successfully achieve long-term weight loss with the REALIZE Band.

2. Are there any similarities between the LAP-BAND® System and the REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band?
Yes, there are several similarities. Both gastric bands work by restricting the amount of food you can eat during a meal and affects the length of time it takes for food to leave the stomach pouch and travel through the digestive tract. They both create a feeling of fullness quicker and having that feeling of fullness last longer. Both gastric bands are implanted surgically using laparoscopy (small incisions). Patients can expect to stay in the hospital overnight for either gastric band. Both have ports that allow the surgeon to adjust the band, based on weight loss. Both gastric bands have similar weight loss outcomes; approximately 40-50% excess body weight loss (EBWL) over 2-3 years. Both bands have comparable complication rates, which are very low.

3. Any difference in the diet?Chart of Realize Band Results
No, all our gastric band patients are required to stay on a full liquid diet with liquid protein supplements for the first six weeks. Then patients progress to soft food and eventually eat more dense foods, such as beef, chicken and pork.

4. So, how do I decide which gastric band is best for me?
Start by doing further research. Make a list of questions you would like to have answered when you meet your surgeon. You can also attend our information sessions, where you can talk to the Bariatric Team and past patients.
