When reaching a diagnosis, your physician may order lab work. Akron General Health System includes six laboratories and seven draw sites that provide outpatient testing for more than 6,000 tests, ranging from routine wellness testing to more complex molecular tests. These tests can help your physician determine the best course of care and treatment.
Laboratory testing is performed by certified laboratory technologists, cytologists and histologists under the director of pathologists who are board certified in clinical and anatomic pathology. Draw sites are staffed by certified phlebotomists. In total, more than 1.4 million tests are performed each year.
Helpful Tips for Outpatient Lab Services
No appointment is needed for routine lab tests and most insurance plans are accepted, regardless of your physician’s affiliation. Simply bring your physician’s order to any of our seven draw sites with your photo ID and insurance information. In addition, follow any pre-test instructions given by your physician. In order to ensure that your results are as accurate as possible, make sure you know whether fasting is required, which means nothing to eat or drink for 10-12 hours before your test, with the exception of water. If you take daily medications, be sure to ask your physician whether you should take them before the test.
Most routine outpatient testing takes less than 30 minutes to complete, from the time you check in until you leave to walk out the door.
Physicians’ orders are good for one year from the date written. Should your order expire or be lost, please contact your physician’s office to obtain a new order.
Your Test Results
Depending on what test is required, your results will be sent to your physician's office within 1-3 days. All follow-up will be handled through your physician's office.
