Neuro Intensive Care (ICU)

Akron General recently opened the first dedicated Neurological Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Summit County – one of only five in the state of Ohio. This special unit is specifically for patients who are recovering or suffering from strokes or other life-threatening neurological diseases and injuries, including traumatic brain injury, brain surgery, coma and injuries to the spine. 

The Neurological ICU is directed by Akron General Neurologist James Gebel, Jr., MD, and the highly trained staff includes neurological nurses and medical, surgical and neurological intensive care physicians. The Neurological ICU provides the highest level of neurological care and cutting-edge technology, which will include intra-operative MRI and portable CT scanner.
