Disaster Planning and HAZMAT Training
Highway crashes, severe weather, chemical spills and fires are just some of the disasters that can strike our community with little or no warning. Now added to these is an ongoing concern over possible terrorist threats to our country and community.
As part of our mission to improve the health and lives of our patients and community, Akron General Medical Center works closely with other area hospitals, the Summit County Emergency Management Agency and local fire, law enforcement and emergency medical response agencies to prepare for all types of community wide disasters. Akron General Medical Center is the hazardous materials (HAZMAT) medical control hospital for Summit County and performs decontamination and treatment of hazardous materials exposures. We also participate in Summit County hazardous materials test drills and provide medical advisors for the City of Akron and Summit County HAZMAT units.
We offer the resources of the entire medical center to care for victims of community wide disasters, including our large 24-hour Emergency Department and our Level I Trauma Center. And we regularly review, test and improve our abilities to care for victims of natural and human-caused disasters, including chemical and biological threats.
Akron General offers both professional and community education courses on preparing for emergencies and preventing trauma.
