Diabetes Center

According to the American Diabetes Association, over 21 million Americans are living with diabetes. That's over six percent of the U.S. population. Still 5.2 million of them don't know they have it. It's listed as the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. and having diabetes can also increase a person's risk sudden cardiac death by two to four times.

That's why, when you have diabetes, managing your lifestyle is so important and yet an ongoing challenge. Akron General's Diabetes Center understands the needs of our patients. We offer educational support to individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and for women with diabetes who become pregnant and women who develop diabetes during pregnancy.

Between the years 1999 and 2000, fifteen percent of all patients discharged from Ohio hospitals had a diagnosis of diabetes, so education and prevention are key. When a person is at an increased risk for diabetes, called pre-diabetes, he or she may be able to prevent or postpone its onset. It's important for people to work with their doctors to know their risks, how to reduce them and when to seek early intervention.

Akron General's certified diabetes educators provide basic education on diabetes, how to better control it with lifestyle changes and also how to prevent potential complications. We offer one on one instruction and group classes during convenient hours - because we understand that life sometimes doesn't wait. Akron General Medical Center is certified by the American Diabetes Association.
