What are Varicose Veins and Spider Veins?
Approximately 20-25 million Americans suffer from varicose and spider veins causing pain, discomfort and cosmetic concerns. It is the function of veins to return blood to the heart. When a vein loses its ability to return blood to the heart, it becomes enlarged due to congestion and pooling of the blood. Blood then collects in the veins in the lower extremities creating varicosities. Spider veins are congested smaller veins and are often visible on the surface of the skin. Spider veins are a major cosmetic concern and symptoms can include pain, heaviness, burning, throbbing, itching, tingling, cramping, swelling and skin ulcers in advanced stages of vein disease.
