Good sleep is an important part of good health
Lodi Community Hospital recognizes fitness, nutrition and sleep as the basic foundation for healthy living. Considering we spend about one-third of our lives sleeping, the quality of our sleep has a big impact on the overall quality of our lives. This important restorative process is critical to our overall general health. The National Institute of Health Center for Sleep Disorders Research estimates that one in three people suffer from a sleep problem, many times without even realizing it. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a condition in which breathing stops many times a night for periods of up to two minutes. It is one of the most common sleep disorders and is often characterized by loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. Sleep Apnea is typically caused by an obstruction in the upper airway. Obesity is a key risk factor for OSA and nearly 95% of the estimated 30 million adults who have OSA have not yet been diagnosed.
Recurring sleep problems usually mean that other aspects of your life may be suffering as well. Physical health, work performance, social relations and even sexual behavior are all directly influenced by the amount and quality of your sleep. But once detected, most sleep disorders can be corrected.
