On December 29, Lodi Community Hospital and the Lodi Medical staff proudly awarded eight $1,000 health career scholarships to local students. The eight students were the third group of recipients to benefit from this scholarship program, currently available to students in the Cloverleaf and Black River Districts and recently expanded to Northwestern and Buckeye Districts. Recipients were: Ashlie and Amanda Jeffries of Black River, Jessica Arena and Cassie Dearth of Buckeye, Candace Andal and Bret Nehrenz of Cloverleaf, and Jordan Mendenhall and Kelsey Reed of Northwestern School District.

The students and their parents were invited to a special brunch with Hospital President Thomas Whelan, Director of Patient Care Services Dana Kocsis, RN, Director of Finance Alan Ganci, Hospital Board Members Steve Sears and Betsy Gilder, and other members of the hospital's management team. During the luncheon, students are encouraged to share their college experiences and plans for the future. Citing examples such as the hospital's Consumer Reports Top Hospital ranking and the recent achievement of the fourth consecutive Press Ganey Summit Award, Whelan provided an overview of the business side of hospital as it relates to providing quality care and patient satisfaction. He also recommended the students develop a personal mission statement that can be refined over the years and can help guide them in where they are going and who they want to be. The luncheon is held during the month of December so the students have had the opportunity to begin their college career and can share experiences and ask specific questions.

Whelan complimented the students on their dedication to pursue a career in the medical field which will allow them to give back to so many others. He encouraged the students to stay in touch as they progress toward their professional goals in the healthcare field, reminding them that the doors of Lodi Community Hospital are always open to them.
