Helping Families Have a Successful Breastfeeding Experience
How Can Breastfeeding Benefit Mother and Baby
Research on infant breastfeeding continues to uncover more evidence on the benefits of breastfeeding for both the infant and the mother. Breastfeeding will help decrease your baby’s chance of long-term diseases including diabetes, certain types of cancers and obesity. Breast milk is uniquely made to meet the specific health needs of your infant, especially for infants who are premature or have health challenges. Mothers also benefit from breastfeeding, including a decreased risk of breast cancer and osteoporosis.
How Often Should You Nurse?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a baby should be breastfed 8-12 times every 24 hours to establish a good milk supply, and to provide the baby with adequate nourishment. It is also recommended that breastfeeding continues for at least 12 months of the infant’s life. The World Health Organization recommends continued breastfeeding for two or more years.
