Akron General Medical Center is a member of the Akron General Health System, one of the area's largest integrated healthcare networks. Our residents are educated in very modern recently completely remodeled, state-of-the-art facilities with vast resources due to being part of such a system. We are fortunate to be in a system with a diverse and knowledgeable medical staff that has been enthusiastic in the training of medical students and residents. Our institution has been repeatedly named as one of "America's 50 Best Hospitals" in U.S. News and World Report, a tribute to the high-quality care and education we provide.
Our faculty is an eclectic mix of energetic, talented and, extremely dedicated individuals that come from diverse backgrounds. Each has special talents and interests and provides our residents with education in a very collegial atmosphere. At the Akron General Center for Family Medicine, you will find a large state-of-the-art facility located on the hospital campus, equipped with physician office laboratories in each module. You will be able to learn and perform several office procedures, among them:
- video colposcopy
- casting and splinting
- laceration repair
- skin lesion excision
- cryotherapy and electrocautery
- IUD insertion
- Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP)
We have a large, remodeled library and spacious offices for residents. We take pride in providing a modern, fully integrated computer network, linking directly with the hospital and Internet from each terminal. We have implemented a complete tablet PC-based electronic medical record system for our office and are utilizing Web visits as well with our patients.
During your residency, you will work side by side with some of the finest nursing and office staff. Our practice management, pharmacology and behavioral science curricula are taught by experts in their fields who work closely with our residents, assisting them with the tools necessary to practice in the ever-changing realm of medical practice.
One of our missions is to provide our graduates with the necessary training to allow them to provide excellent, compassionate and comprehensive care to their patients when they enter practice. They are taught how to be their patient's advocate and how to coordinate their total health care. Our graduates are comfortable in their roles as competent and effective family physicians and are ready to assume their practices.
For osteopathic medicine candidates, we currently have three DO's in our faculty. DO residents are encouraged to maintain their OMM skills. Precepting for OMM is available in our center. Our curriculum meets licensing requirements for DO's as well as for allopathic residents.
