What Our Residents Say...
"I chose Akron General's Surgery residency because of its reputation in training highly successful clinical general surgeons. You are in the operating room from the first day of your residency career and you are exposed to multi-disciplinary surgeries."
"As a resident, you will learn techniques in open, minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Each resident has daily communication with their attendings regarding patient care, procedures and literature review."
"As a graduate of the program, each resident is highly capable of functioning as an independent general surgeon without the need of further fellowship training."

"Even if you were actively looking, it will be a real challenge to find a General Surgery program that matches what Akron General has to offer. Just to touch on the highlights, the operative experience is great. You have the luxury to be one-on-one with attendings for almost, if not all cases. There is great rapport between residents and attendings - residents at ALL levels communicate directly with attendings. We also have wonderful attendings with a wealth of experience, they are all very willing to teach and make you a great surgeon."
"Deciding on when and why you need to perform an operation is of paramount importance and, at Akron General, by PGY 2, you will be comfortable to begin making such decisions. Senior residents are always available and ready to assist when needed. Whether you want to remain a General Surgeon or pursue fellowship training, you are guaranteed to have a solid General Surgery foundation by chief year. The program director places emphasis on a balance between service & learning; our educational curriculum includes the SCORE curriculum, journal club, conferences and M&M."

"When choosing a residency program, I knew I wanted to go to train at a community hospital where I could get a lot of hands-on experience. But Akron General offers more than the “out of nowhere” training program. It is closely affiliated with a local medical school and the Cleveland Clinic - where we do our transplant surgery rotation or research. Akron General also emphasizes resident education through regular weekday conferences, medical student teachings, and research opportunities. We have excellent attendings who are dedicated to our learning and really take the time to teach during rounds."
"I love that I feel challenged by my seniors and attendings to always get better at something - to improve my surgical skills & knowledge to provide better care for my patients."
"It’s only my second month here, and I’ve already assisted on Aorto-Bifem bypass, weight loss surgery, bowel resection, etc; and just this past week, an attending directly guided me in putting a chest tube at bedside (with lots of patience!)."
"Another very important reason that I chose Akron General is that it’s full of staff who are very friendly and helpful, and not to forget that we have a GREAT group of surgery residents to work with this year! I am enjoying my learning experience and I have no regrets in choosing Akron General."

General Surgery
"I chose Akron General for the operative experience. I knew that as an intern I would be in the operating room. Our residents have always had much more than the required number of cases for graduation. Also, Akron General Medical Center is a level I trauma center which provides us extensive experience in trauma."
"There is an additional one-year of research provided to a PGY-3 each year. This gives the opportunity to publish research, which aids in obtaining competitive fellowships."
"Finally, Akron is a wonderful and affordable place to live, with Cuyahoga Valley National Park right in our backyard."
— Amanda "Mandie" Mendiola, MD
