Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

A Letter from the Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program

Welcome to Akron General Medical Center's Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Web page! We are committed to providing the finest education possible in Obstetrics & Gynecology to our residents in training.

Akron General Medical Center has earned national honors including being repeatedly listed in U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" issue, one of America’s Most Wired & Most Wireless Hospitals by Hospitals & Health Networks Magazine, and we have repeatedly been named "Akron's Most Preferred Hospital for Overall Quality and Image" by National Research Corporation. All training is primarily conducted on the Akron General Medical Center campus with modern, state-of-the-art facilities with vast resources due to being part of such a large system.

Akron offers superb educational systems and beautiful recreational areas, and is within close proximity to major shopping and professional sporting events. The greater Akron area is truly one of the best places in the country to live and raise a family.

Our Obstetrics and Gynecology program is approved for 16 residents or 4 per level of training. Our 50+ obstetrician/gynecologists, constituting the active teaching staff, include three subspecialists in Gynecologic Oncology, five subspecialists in Maternal Fetal Medicine, five subspecialists in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, two subspecialists in Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery, and one urologist who specializes in female urogynecology. All patients are considered teaching patients and our teaching faculty has a vast amount of experience and has always been enthusiastic about the training of our residents.

Due to the very large volume of cases, our residents' surgical experience ranks them consistently above the 90th percentile nationwide for most major surgical procedures. There were more than 2300 gynecologic procedures performed last year and extensive experience is obtained as well in all aspects of obstetrical care.

Our large remodeled library provides a comfortable study environment and includes a modern, fully integrated computer network with Internet access.

Protected conference time is scheduled Monday through Thursday. Fridays have a four-hour "Grand Rounds" protected block time, which provides for extended workshops, visiting professorships and other educational events. A two-year cycle of organized conferences provides all residents with the knowledge necessary to meet their educational objectives in every aspect of obstetrics and gynecology.

Residents also participate in workshops and conferences at NEOUCOM(Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine) and are actively involved in the teaching of M3 and M4 medical students. Senior medical student electives are provided in Gynecologic Oncology, General Obstetrics & Gynecology and High Risk Obstetrics.

Research projects are required by each resident before graduation. Our Kenneth Calhoun Research Center, on campus, is available to residents for their research projects as are the laboratories at NEOUCOM.

The hospital's Women's Health Clinic provides outpatient experience through their obstetric and gynecology continuity clinics and specialty clinics.

Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility rotations provide experience with in vitro fertilization as well as extensive video operative laparoscopic experience. This includes micro-surgical technique and laser surgery. Video hysteroscopic surgeries are performed on a regular basis as well.

The Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery provides educational experiences in both non-surgical office evaluations in urodynamics, cystoscopy, etc. as well as extensive surgical experience.

Gynecologic Oncology is one of the hospital's busiest services, with one of the largest of groups of gynecologic oncologists in the midwest. Residents gain extensive experience in all aspects of cancer management including chemotherapy, radium insertions and all radical gynecologic surgeries including experience in surgery of the urinary and gastrointestinal tracts.

Our Perinatal Unit serves as a regional referral center and includes full time Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists. The Unit averages nearly 3,200 obstetric ultrasounds and amniocentesis per year. Our hospital-based Level II Special Care Nursery Unit includes full time neonatology staff coverage.

Rotation information for each year of the residency program can be found under "Sample Rotation" on the website.

Our mission is to provide our graduates with the necessary training to provide excellent, compassionate and comprehensive Ob/Gyn care to their patients when they enter practice. Residents are taught how to be patient advocates and how to coordinate their total healthcare.

We believe that the breadth and depth of educational experience our residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology provides is the best available anywhere. All of our residents who have desired to proceed with subspecialty training have been excepted into subspecialty programs. Akron General boasts graduates in all four subspecialty fields. Many have gone on to full time academic careers. The residency is organized to introduce residents to subspecialty areas during its first two years in order to assist those residents who are interested in planning for fellowships.

Furthermore, a visit with our residents will quickly demonstrate their overall happiness and satisfaction with our training program. We pride ourselves on our congenial training atmosphere and sense of community among the residents and faculty. We assure you that none of our residents have exited the program unhappy with their training. We welcome you to look through the information provided here and to call us further information and for an interview. Our faculty, staff and residents invite you to train at Akron General Medical Center's Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program, one of the best residency programs available anywhere.
