Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program

A Culture of Teaching

The Orthopaedic Surgical Residency Program at Akron General Medical Center is designed to provide five years of training in all aspects of orthopedic surgery so that upon its completion, the graduating resident is a superbly well-trained orthopaedic surgeon capable of general orthopaedic surgery in different arenas. These include clinical practice, participation in any of the orthopaedic specialties, completion of fellowship training and participation in an academic or teaching environment.

We recruit bright, enthusiastic senior students who have demonstrated a history of academic achievement, work ethic, volunteerism and a strong moral character.

Application Requirements

Residency applications and the additional items below must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Interview Dates: Wednesdays starting 11/13/2013 to 01/29/2014
Expected Program Length: 5 years
Application consists of:
• Medical School Academic Transcript
• MSPE Letter
• Minimum USMLE (Step I and Step II) Scores of 75 or higher
• Three letters of recommendation (from orthopaedic surgery and general surgery faculty only. One letter MUST be from an Orthopaedic Department Chairman or Program Director)
• Personal statement

Interviews are by invitation only. The invitations are sent via email in mid October. If you have been selected, we will contact you using the information you have provided through ERAS.

FAQS

Do you accept more than three letters of recommendation? We accept as many as you wish to submit through ERAS. We review all of the information submitted with the application.

Lodging- Akron General pays for the hotel room the evening before the interview day. The hotel also provides a shuttle that will bring you over to the hospital that morning at about 6:50 a.m. You will be met by the Coordinator and brought back to the Orthopaedic Department to meet some of the staff, faculty and residents. You will observe Fracture Conference that starts at 8 a.m. Interviews with the Program Director and Chairman are after conference. Lunch will be provided. A research overview is provided by our Research Director. A benefits presentation is also provided. The interview day also consists of a tour of Akron General Medical Center, Akron Children's Hospital (almost across the street) and a guided tour of the local area. The interview day usually ends around 4 p.m.

We do schedule an evening program the evening before. An informal "Meet 'n Greet" with the residents at local restaurant/ sports bar.

Interested in rotating? Akron General Medical Center uses VSAS, the Visiting Student Application Service, to process visiting student applications.
