Urology Residency Program

A Letter from the Director of the Urology Residency Program

Thank you for your interest in our combined NEOMED Urology Residency Training Program at Akron General Medical Center and Summa Health System.

The Department of Urology offers two PGY-1 positions in our program, which is an integrated residency program of the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). Training encompasses the entire scope of urology, including urologic oncology, male infertility, endourology, minimally invasive surgery, and female urology and incontinence. Rotations also include the opportunity to perform urodynamic testing and to do either clinical or basic science research. The pediatric experience is extensive and is included in rotations during the PGY-2 and PGY-4 years. There is extensive exposure to reconstructive urology, neurogenic bladder, in utero diagnosis of GU anomalies, inguinal anatomy and pathology, and all forms of urologic imaging.

The program consists of one pre-urology year in general surgery at Akron General Medical Center and Akron City Hospital/Summa. The subsequent four years consist of one month training in nephrology and training in adult and pediatric urology. The program fulfills the American Board of Urology requirements for five years of post-graduate training required for board certification.

The NEOMED Urology program accepts all applications through ERAS. Every year, the deadline for applications is in early October. Academic transcripts, Dean's Letter, three letters of recommendation, personal statement, curriculum vitae, and USMLE Step 1 (and Step 2 scores, if available) are required for a complete application. Our program participates in the AUA Residency Matching Program for Urology and the NRMP for the pre-urology year. All those interested in applying to our program should register with these matching programs. Those candidates matching in the Urology program are required to complete the pre-urology year at AGMC & Summa.

Please note that if you are invited to visit, you will be scheduled to interview at Summa Health System. You will be contacted whether or not you are invited for an interview. If you have any questions about the program, please call Mandarin Ross in the Department of Urology at 330-543-8212.

Sincerely,

Phllip Nasrallah, Residency DirectorPhillip F. Nasrallah, MD
