Thank you for your interest in the Preliminary Medicine Residency Program at Akron General Medical Center. We offer four Preliminary Medicine positions to students who are looking for a strong clinical year. This may serve as a foundation as you enter other fields such as Anesthesiology, Radiology, Ophthalmology or as a preparatory year as you assess your career options.
The Preliminary Medicine schedule resembles the Categorical Internal Medicine first year with a few exceptions. First, Preliminary Medicine residents are given up to three months of elective time that may be taken outside the Department of Medicine. This gives the Preliminary Medicine resident the opportunity to rotate in specific disciplines they may be considering for future training. Secondly, Preliminary Medicine residents are given the option to participate in the continuity care clinic. However, if you have not secured a position in a subsequent training program you will be scheduled to participate in the continuity clinic. Should you participate in the continuity care clinic, you would carry a panel of your own patients for an outpatient experience.
I encourage you to seriously consider spending a year with us in the Preliminary Medicine Program. We will work with you to make sure the year meets your needs and prepares you for your future career.
Sincerely,
Titus G. Sheers, MD Program Director
