Akron General Medical Center provides the resources for an excellent educational experience –- whether it's as a medical student, resident or as a practicing physician. The Kenneth Calhoun Research Laboratory is staffed by four PhDs and two MDs to help support the interests and needs of our residents, students and faculty. With the help of PACS radiology imaging systems, electronic medical records, a wireless network and specially designed Web portal, our physicians spend more time where they prefer to be – with patients.

We also know that life can be busy. That's why we provide the other facilities, services and conveniences to make things work a little more smoothly and keep our staff in step. On call quarters are stocked daily with sandwiches, fruit, sodas and milk. Free uniforms, on-site laundry services, an exercise allowance and other great benefits are also a part of the medical education experience at Akron.

State-of-the-Art Simulation: An Integrated Approach
Learners at Akron General have the opportunity to experience life-like clinical situations and hone their skills through our Simulation Center. While many programs focus solely on mechanical simulation and skills practice utilizing mannequins, we offer an integrated approach to provide our learners with the preparation they need to practice medicine in tomorrow's environment. We are able to provide this with a large facility that provides patient examination rooms for standardized patient interactions, wireless remote mannequin for situational scenarios, and a variety of specific task trainers for central line placement, chest tube placement, intubation, lumbar puncture, and casting/splinting.

In addition to traditional simulation, our Simulation Center offers:

  • Training in psychomotor skills for surgical techniques through our Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) Program. Akron General surgeons perform some of the most cutting edge minimally invasive procedures. The FLS program helps build the skills required to ultimately train along side our surgeons in the OR and develop confidence with fine instrumentation and resident's individual surgical technique.
  • Training and practice for effective patient interviews and team communication. Studies show that effective physician-patient communication can lead to improved patient health outcomes. We recognize how difficult it can be to have candid conversations on sensitive topics. Our teaching staff is available to coach learners through this process and provide opportunities to practice effective communication.
  • Situational practice and analysis. This ultimate practical approach allows learners to simulate their role in an a potential situation, debrief after the event and build confidence in their capabilities, which is critical particularly during stressful situations.
  • Critical skills practice required to help prevent, identify early on, and handle rare events. The goal is to provide an inclusive experience that what would normally take years of practice to accumulate.

The department of Medical Education includes a  auditorium, media center, classrooms and catering services. Easily accessible from patient care staff areas, this facility houses weekly grand rounds and various educational seminars for professionals and the community.
