Overview

Akron General Volunteers are an important part of our healthcare team, providing the personal touches that patients and their families need, appreciate and remember.

Volunteers assist in areas such as mail and flower delivery, patient wheelchair transportation, information desks, outpatient lab, emergency department, patient representatives, spiritual care, clerical support and the gift shop just to name a few. A typical volunteer commitment is one four-hour shift a week.

Additional volunteer opportunities include:

  • Service League
The Service League, established in 1956 is dedicated to providing in-service volunteerism along with fundraising to help support hospital projects and services. The Service League sponsors the fundraisers, including the Valentine's Day carnation sale, jewelry sales, uniform sales, handbag sales and more. The Service League also sponsors the annual Nursing Scholarship Awards for undergraduate and graduate nursing students.
  • Women’s Board
Cleveland Clinic Akron General recognizes the Women’s Board for its dedicated service and support. The Women’s Board is a volunteer organization that raises funds to benefit Cleveland Clinic Akron General’s patients, caregivers and community. Established in 1932, the Women’s Board has raised nearly $10 million.
  • Teens
Teens interested in a healthcare career must be 15 years old and complete an application, have a counsellor's reference and interview before being accepted into the program. A minimum of 50 hours is required.
  • College Students
Often curriculum is designed to encourage or require volunteer hours for a field of study. Akron General supports students who need volunteer hours in preparation for admission to specialty programs such as Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Radiology, Medical School or Nursing School.
  • Volunteer from Home
At home volunteer opportunities are available in the Prayer Partner Volunteer program and two sewing programs for Cardiac Pillow Case and Isolette Covers.
  • Volunteer as a Healthcare Partner
We work with Healthcare Partners, defined as patients and the community that cares for them, and Cleveland Clinic Akron General caregivers to transform healthcare and support our vision of patients first. Healthcare Partners can sit on committees to provide a patient perspective, review materials handed out to patients, participate in Leadership Rounds and many other things. We are trying to improve healthcare through collaboration.
