Research Training Requirements

Human Subjects Research: Investigator Training
All individuals involved in human subjects research at Akron General Medical Center (AGMC) must be knowledgeable of the regulations concerning the conduct of such research, and possess credentials qualifying them to carry out studies involving human subjects. This includes physicians, nurses, nursing students, medical students, staff members, graduate students, and others who will make use of AGMC resources or facilities during the course of a research study. Training must be kept current through initial and continuing education. All credentials and documentation of training must be on file in the Research Administration office before any research activities may begin

Akron General Medical Center is a member of the Austen BioInnovations Institute at Akron (ABIA). Investigators participating in ABIA collaborative human subjects research, will have met ABIA Human Subjects Certification requirements by completing the AGMC training.

Training must be kept current through initial and continuing education. All credentials and documentation of training must be on file in the Research Administration office before any research activities may begin.

Initial Training
At AGMC, the minimum requirement for human subjects research training is completion of CITI training module for Biomedical Research and the Conflict of Interest Module with an average score of 80% or greater on the quizzes. 

  • Go to: https://www.citiprogram.org
  • Follow directions for registration if you are a new user.
  • Choose Akron General Medical Center as your affiliation. If you have ever been affiliated with another institution and completed some or all modules, sign in and ADD AN AFFILIATION with Akron General to your profile.
  • Under Select curriculum question 1, choose Biomedical Research Investigators: (Everything else available on site is optional.)
  • The training does not need to be completed in one session.
  • Research Administration will be notified when you have completed the training. You may wish to print your training certificate for your own records.

Conflict of Interest Module
All research investigators are required to take the Conflict of Interest training

  • Go to: Add a "Course" or "Update Your Learner Groups" for Akron General Medical Center.
  • Go to the question, "Would you like to take a Conflicts of Interest course?" and answer "Yes."
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "Continue."
  • You will be taken back to the main page.
  • Under "My Courses" scroll down to "Conflict of Interest Stage 1" and click "Enter."

Continuing Education
Investigators and research personnel who have completed their initial human subjects/ethics training are required to refresh that training through the CITI program Biomedical Research Refresher Course and Research Conflicts of Interest Course every 3 years following initial training. Documentation of continuing education must be on file with the office of Research Administration before study renewals or new studies can be reviewed by the IRRB.
