Description

Description

Objective: To expose students to the full spectrum of Family Medicine, including adult care, pediatrics, obstetrics, geriatrics and home care.

This rotation consists of:

  • Ambulatory care.
  • Some inpatient experience.
  • Community learning activities.
  • Lectures/workshops.
  1. Ambulatory care: You will see pediatric, adult, OB, and geriatric patients in our outpatient office, working alongside both attending and resident physicians. You will conduct exams, assist with treatments, and provide patient education, all while presenting cases and receiving feedback and guidance.

You will also get experience writing SOAP notes and will receive feedback frequently from our faculty on your notes. Our attending physicians as well as our residents are widely known for their skill and enthusiasm for teaching.

We will work with you to tailor this rotation to your specific interests within Family Medicine as much as possible.

  2. Inpatient: You will spend one week doing hospital rounds – including pre-rounding – seeing hospitalized patients from our practice. In addition, you will also have the opportunity to present new admissions during Table Rounds and make recommendations on their management plans.

As part of comprehensive family care, you will also get some exposure to newborn care in our office and in the nursery.

Evening and weekend call is required to enhance your rotation experience. You may pick the days that suit you best.

  3. Community experiences: Family Medicine has a particular focus on underserved care, and as such, you will experience providing patient education and care in a women’s shelter/free clinic, under the direction of an attending physician or nurse practitioner.

Our practice also conducts home visits, and you will be assigned to accompany a faculty member seeing homebound patients and/or patients recently discharged from the hospital.

Additionally, you will spend a half day in a geriatric living center, working alongside a faculty member and residents, providing acute care to both rehabilitation and long-term residents.

Lectures/workshops:

  • Interactive pharmacotherapy sessions with our department’s PharmD.
  • Suture workshop with a faculty member.
  • Hospice seminar and Introduction to Family Medicine session, led by our Director of Behavioral Science.
  • Patient Care Discussions, where you will give an interactive/participatory teaching session to fellow medical students and faculty.
  • Weekly Didactic sessions, geared toward residents and students, on a variety of topics including procedure workshops.
