Objectives:

  • To provide instruction in the subspecialty of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine that deals with the diagnosis and management of a variety of injuries commonly associated with recreational and competitive sports.
  • To provide students with an opportunity to work directly with an entire sports medicine team consisting of primary care sports medicine specialists, orthopaedic surgeons, athletic trainers and physical therapists.
  • To understand the importance of appropriate pre-participation readiness and rehabilitation principles involved in Sports Medicine.
  • To introduce the student to the principles of the role of physical activity in health promotion.

      Description:

    • Attend clinic with teaching faculty.
    • Assist in surgery on cases deemed appropriate.
    • Provide end-of-rotation oral report (5 - 10 minutes) on an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine topic.
    • Typical daily schedule: Four weeks devoted to Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, including office work and surgical care.
    • Attend orthopaedic didactic lectures.
    • Attendance at athletic events and other institute-based events is mandatory.

        Night Call/Special Requirements: Attendance at evening athletic events (seasonal)
