Akron General Medical Center is a regional referral center for the treatment of orthopaedic conditions. Its orthopaedic surgeons were the first in Northeastern Ohio to implant the ceramic prosthetic hip, a device designed to provide longer wear and a better quality of life for patients.

Akron General is a major center for obstetrics and women’s health, providing women an entire range of clinical services from heart care to reproductive health to pre- and postnatal care. Akron General has partnered with Akron Children’s Hospital, a leader in neonatal critical care to offer the highest level of care for newborns through its Special Care Nursery at Akron General. In 2004, Akron General physicians delivered Ohio’s first ever set of sextuplets.
Akron General’s Comprehensive Wound Healing & Limb Preservation Center provides one of the area’s only multidisciplinary environments for collaboration and innovation in the area of difficult-to-treat wounds, pressure sores, tissue necrosis and other wound healing conditions. With twelve years of experience, we provide the full spectrum of care needed for complex cases, including cases requiring treatment with hyberbaric oxygen.
With extensive experience in performing product evaluation trials, our Wound Center boasts its own dedicated research coordinator and access to multiple specialists and provides a key clinical testing site for the Northeastern Ohio Consortium for Wound Healing, Research and Education, and the Heal Ohio Collaborative.
Akron General Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute is the most experienced and largest accredited rehabilitation facility in the region, specializing in helping patients who have experienced strokes, head traumas, spinal cord injuries, multiple traumas, amputations, orthopaedic, neuromuscular and related conditions. The goal at Edwin Shaw is to reduce the extent of disability and maximize the long-term functional independence of patients with disabling diseases and/or injuries. Edwin Shaw is also the location of one of the area's longest running chemical dependency treatment programs for adolescents.
