Akron General's Medical Education and Research offers summer research fellowship opportunities each year. College students enrolled in pre-medical or pre-graduate science (such as biology-, chemistry- and engineering-related sciences) programs and BS/MD students are eligible to apply. Currently, fellowship projects are funded at $2,500 for eight weeks or $1,875 for six weeks.
In January, Akron General research investigators submit research project proposals. In February, available projects are posted for students to select and apply for interviews with the research investigators. Interviews are scheduled through March and students are notified by April 1 of candidate acceptance.
Throughout the fellowship period, students are able to shadow with attending physicians and residents or to observe activities in various medical departments or the Calhoun Research Laboratory. Students are anticipated to attend a Fellowship Symposium in July and to provide an oral presentation summarizing their research topic, progress and/or results from the study.
