Education & Training Opportunities - Paramedic Education Program

Akron General’s Paramedic Education Program (AGMC PME) was initiated in 1976 as a commitment to the community in providing prehospital care to citizens within Summit County and adjoining areas. Since then the program has graduated more than 1200 paramedics, most still practicing within the Summit County area.

The Program is accredited by the Ohio Department of Public Safety and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). AGMC PME was the first hospital-based program in Ohio and 72nd in the Country to obtain CAAHEP National Certification in 1991. Currently the Program is one of 17 in the State of Ohio and one of 459 in the Country that meets the rigid CAAHEP quality standards for excellence in Paramedic Education.

Akron General’s Paramedic Education Program  currently offers the following courses:

EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) is an approximate 4-month course, 120-130 hours of didactic, clinical and field internship that prepares the student for the State/National examination to obtain EMT Certification. The EMT course is held twice a year. The application process begins in the spring for the September Course and in October for the January Course. A general knowledge pre-entrance exam is held prior to acceptance. EMT Application

EMT- Paramedic (Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic) is a 10-month course, 800-850 hours of didactic, clinical and field internships to prepare the students in meeting entry-level EMT-Paramedic criteria. The application process begins in the spring with classes beginning late August or early September annually. Applicants must meet several entrance requirements including having State of Ohio EMT Certification to be eligible to sit for the pretest held annually early July. EMT Paramedic Application

The University of Akron’s Community and Technical College formed an Articulation Agreement with Akron General Medical Center to provide eligible graduates the opportunity to transfer thirty academic credit hours towards the Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services Technology Degree. This opportunity is available to all AGMC PME graduates with a graduation date of 1985 and thereafter. Both the AGMC EMT and AGMC PME courses are found on the University of Akron’s course offerings.
