Akron
General's Paramedic Education Program (AGMC PME)
was initiated in 1977 as a commitment to the community
in providing prehospital care to citizens within
Summit County and adjoining areas. Since 1977,
the program has graduated more than 925 paramedics,
most still practicing within the Summit County
area.
Our program is accredited by
the Ohio Department of Public Safety. National
Accreditation was obtained in 1991 and is maintained
through the Committee on Accreditation of Educational
Program for the EMS Professions (CoAEMSP) of the
American Medical Association. The Paramedic Education
Program is one of only 90 in Ohio and 800-plus
across the county that meets the rigid CoAEMSP
quality standards for excellence in paramedic
education. The program participated in the writing
of two prehospital textbooks, Comprehensive
Guide to Prehospital Skills (Butman, Martin,
et al) and The Paramedic Survival Handbook
(Martin).
The Paramedic Education Program
currently offers a 10-month paramedic course to
prepare students in meeting entry level EMT-paramedic
criteria. The application process begins in the
Spring with classes beginning late August or early
September each year. Applicants must meet several
entrance requirements, including EMT-Basic certification
status in Ohio. This certification is a requirement
to sit for the pretest, which is held at the end
of June.
EMT-Basic courses are offered
at AGMC twice a year. These courses begin each
January and September and consist of 120-130 hours
of didactic, clinical and field internship. The
approximate three-month course prepares the student
for the State/National examination to obtain EMT-Basic
Certification.
The University of Akron's Community
and Technical College formed an Articulation Agreement
with Akron General Medical Center to provide eligible
graduates the opportunity to transfer thirty academic
credit hours towards the Associate of Applied
Science in Emergency Medical Services Technology
Degree. This opportunity is available to all AGMC
PME Graduates with a graduation date of 1985 and
thereafter. For more information on this program,
or for an application, call 330-344-6655.
