From Surgery, to the Beach and Back

"Everyone finds it kind of crazy, but I felt great-better actually," said Erin Riley, 23. "My mom packed the car and told me 'We're going to the beach!' so I went!" Erin said.

Riley had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy to remove her gallbladder on July 1, 2009. The sand and the surf were the farthest thing from her mind. Much to her surprise, however, Erin would soon find herself sitting on Virginia Beach, enjoying the sand, sun and ocean in less than 72 hours.

The minimally invasive surgical techniques Mark Horattas, MD, used at Akron General only required tiny incisions and no over-night stay. Riley was released within hours of her surgery to return home.

The Surgery Center at Akron General Health & Wellness, located in Montrose, offers the most advanced technologies to ensure patient comfort, faster recovery time, less scarring and better results. Many surgical procedures can be performed using laparoscopic and other minimally invasive techniques. Recently added state of the art equipment, imaging and instrumentation makes the Surgery Center the most recently modernized facility in the area.

"Before my surgery, I was in a constant state of pain or worry. I changed my diet to avoid eating spicy foods," Erin said. "But now I feel great, and thankfully, I can eat my favorite food again-burritos!"

Erin had suffered from abdominal and digestive pain for more than two years when she scheduled her first appointment with Dr. Horattas, one of many general surgeons at Akron General specializing in minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques.

"I knew that Dr. Horattas would find the cause of my pain, and be able to help," Erin said.

After Erin's initial evaluation, Dr. Horattas scheduled Erin for a HIDA scan, which stands for hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid scan and is used to determine the level of gallbladder function. The HIDA scan confirmed his suspicions, as Erin’s gallbladder was not functioning at all.

"I was relieved, to finally know what was wrong, and that surgery would stop the pain," Erin said.

That's when Dr. Horattas scheduled Erin for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy at the Surgery Center at Akron General Health & Wellness.

"I can’t say enough about my experience. The ease of pre-surgical testing, the excellent anesthesia and pain management, the surgical and post-op care and the follow-up treatment were incredible. I was in and out of surgery within a day," Erin said.

While this was Erin's first visit to Dr. Horattas' office, it wasn't her first visit to Akron General. Erin was delivered by Thomas Stover, MD, at Akron General, and had laparoscopic laser surgery performed by Ross Marchetta, MD.

When it comes to choosing outstanding medical care accompanied by personal treatment, Erin chooses Akron General. "I'd recommended Akron General, especially the Surgery Center at Akron General Health & Wellness, to anyone," Erin said.
