Akron General Announces Center of Excellence for Urology Care
Akron General Health System and Physicians Urology/Center for Urologic Health today announced a landmark partnership that will create an unparalleled Center of Excellence in urology care for Summit County and beyond.
Effective August 1, 2010, Akron General will enter into a Professional Services Agreement with Akron-based Physicians Urology. The goal of the partnership is to expand the already strong urology services in Summit County. Physicians Urology will maintain all of its current locations, and plans to expand its realm of services in a number of areas. Concurrently, Akron General will purchase Physicians Urology's existing Cancer Treatment Center on West Exchange Street, though the management and day-to-day operations of the center will not change in any way. Through this agreement, Akron General will contract with the physicians and staff of the Center for Urologic Health to continue offering excellence in all cancer treatment services, including radiation therapy for prostate cancer.
"This is the major step we needed to take to fully establish a Center of Excellence in urology care at Akron General," said Dr. Thomas L. "Tim" Stover, President of Outpatient Services at Akron General. "We are thrilled to be in partnership with these 12 outstanding physicians and look forward, together, to providing our communities with the best care in urology, for both men's and women’s health."
The 12 physicians contracting with Akron General are: Dennis F. Bentley, MD; Raymond A. Bologna, MD; Todd F. Breaux, MD; Brian T. Canterbury, MD; Gregory G. Danesis, MD; Joseph S. Dankoff, MD; Douglas H. Green, MD; Lawrence L. Geller, MD; Howard B. Minott, MD; Kevin A. Spear, MD; John D. Wegryn, MD; and John Y. Zhao, MD.
"There is an increasing demand for urology services, ranging from a wide spectrum of male infertility, kidney stones and prostate cancer to female incontinence issues," said Dr. Bologna, Chairman of the Department of Urology at Akron General. "Our experienced medical team can provide the best treatment options for our patients, whether they suffer from life-altering incontinence or life-threatening cancer."
Under the new agreement, Akron General has forged partnerships with all six Physicians Urology practices: two in Akron and one each in Barberton, Fairlawn, Ravenna and Stow. Physicians Urology/Center for Urologic Health was established more than four years ago in March 2006.
