Edwin Shaw awarded highest level of CARF accreditation

The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International recently accredited Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute for a period of three years for the following programs:

  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs – Hospital (Adults)
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs – Hospital (Children and Adolescents)
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs – Hospital: Brain Injury Program (Adults)
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs – Hospital: Brain Injury Program (Children and Adolescents)
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs – Hospital: Stroke Specialty Program (Adults)
  • Interdisciplinary Outpatient Medical Rehabilitation Programs (Adults)
  • Single Discipline Outpatient Medical Rehabilitation Programs (Adults)

This accreditation decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial compliance to the CARF standards. An organization receiving a three-year accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable, and accountable.

Edwin Shaw was also recognized by CARF as demonstrating exemplary performance relative to the clinical expertise of its personnel. According to CARF, it is a rarity within the rehabilitation industry for a facility to maintain a core of professionals with the skills and credentials of those who serve the patients at Edwin Shaw. In its report, CARF cited, "A high percentage of the staff members have certification as certified rehabilitation registered nurses (CRRNs). Also, many therapists have specialty certifications." Edwin Shaw currently employs the following therapy personnel who have had advanced training and therefore are considered to be elite in their ability to assess and treat patients:

  • 11 Certified Brain Injury Specialists
  • 2 Board Certified Neurologic Clinical Specialists
  • 6 Neurological Development Trained Specialists
  • 4 Vital Stim Certified Speech & Language Pathologists
  • 2 Certified Drivers Rehabilitation Specialists
  • 13 Certified Clinical Instructors
  • 2 Lymphedema Specialists
  • 2 Certified Functional Capacity Evaluators
  • 2 Vestibular Competency Certified therapists
  • 1 Assistive Technology Provider
  • 1 McKenzie Certified Therapist

The nonprofit Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute is an acute care rehabilitation hospital within the Akron General Health System. The Institute has inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation operations in Cuyahoga Falls and has outpatient satellite clinics at four other locations.

According to Kim Strubel, Vice President of the Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute, "Our entire team is extremely pleased with the survey outcome. A facility cannot be awarded the highest level of accreditation unless it is able to demonstrate to the CARF surveyors that the patient is the cornerstone of all decision-making. We strive very hard to listen to our patients to determine what they feel they need from us in terms of care delivery and what they hope to achieve in our program. Although we are required to survey each patient only one time to determine his or her level of satisfaction with our services, at Edwin Shaw we actually survey our patients at three intervals. We truly care about the perceptions of those individuals whom we serve."

CARF is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of persons served. Founded in 1966 as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, and now known as CARF, the accrediting body establishes consumer-focused standards to help organizations measure and improve the quality of their programs and services.
