Akron General Announces Creation of Neuroscience Institute

As part of a series of strategic initiatives to strengthen health and medical services within the Akron community, Akron General Health System has announced plans for the development of a new Neuroscience Institute.

The Neuroscience Institute, which becomes an official service line at Akron General April 1, will be phased in over several years with focus on a wide array of neurosurgical services. Plans for 2011 include the renovation of four operating suites that will accommodate state-of the-art equipment previously not available in Summit County, including Gamma Knife radiosurgical treatment for brain tumors and an intraoperative CT suite that integrates intraoperative imaging – from high-field MRI to multi-slice CT – with surgical navigation, planning and digital data management in the operating room. "Smart" technology in the OR will also be part of the expansion. Future plans call for the development of a dedicated neurological intensive care unit. An interventional pain management program is also part of the comprehensive clinical plan.

Initially, much of the patient care at the institute will focus on disorders of the brain, spine and peripheral nerves. As the institute expands, it will include many additional neurological areas, and there will be a major focus on non-surgical neurologic disease. Stroke is currently the third leading killer in the United States and focus on this and other cerebrovascular diseases, such as brain aneurysms and carotid stenosis, will become increasingly prevalent as the Baby Boomer generation ages.

The creation of the new institute will be spearheaded by three area neurosurgeons: Georges Z. Markarian, MD, who will serve as Chairman of the newly formed Neurosciences Department; Kamel F. Muakkassa, MD; and Ghassan F. Khayyat, MD. The three physicians currently practice in the Center for Neuro and Spine on S. Cleveland-Massillon Road in Akron. Outpatient services provided under the Neuroscience Institute will be delivered at this location. Two other neurosurgeons are expected to be added to the team this summer, and recruitment of several neuroscientists is under way. This expansive team will focus not only on general neurosurgical procedures, but also on specialized care including neurooncology, skull base surgery, endovascular neurosurgery and complex spinal procedures.

"We are bringing expertise from all the different sides of cutting-edge neuroscience to the community," said Dr. Markarian. "We could not have accomplished this without the strong support of Akron General, and we look forward to a long, successful relationship."

"This agreement with the three neurosurgeons was born from their prescience," said Vincent J. McCorkle, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Akron General Health System. "This unique relationship accelerates the presence of leading-edge medicine to the Greater Akron community and reinforces Akron General's mission to improve the health and lives of its patients and the community."

In the past six months under McCorkle’s leadership, Akron General has recruited six new cardiologists, partnered with the 12-member Physicians Urology medical group and created a new Plastic Surgery Institute with the addition of three plastic surgeons just last month.
