Akron General Health System has opened a new 10-bed Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Akron General Medical Center. The new ICU was dedicated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week with officials from Akron General Health System, as well as from Senator Sherrod Brown’s office in attendance.
The new unit is the first dedicated Neuro ICU in Summit County and one of only five in the state of Ohio. It is designed specifically for patients who are recovering or suffering from strokes or other life-threatening neurological diseases and injuries, including brain cancers, traumatic brain injury, brain surgery, coma and those of the spine. Dr. James Gebel is the Medical Director.
Akron General converted 10 of its 69 critical care beds in developing the Neuro ICU. It is the latest step in a series of moves designed to create the area’s preeminent Neuroscience Institute. Under the leadership of Neuroscience Chair Dr. Georges Markarian, the Institute has recruited several leading physicians to its ranks over the past several months and has invested in the latest technology for the treatment of neurological disorders. It is expected that through the new Neuroscience Institute, many of the 600 Summit County residents who leave the county each year for neurological care, will now be able to receive their care close to home, in Akron.
