Akron General Health System is partnering with Leadership Akron to create a Community Leadership Institute named for the late Akron General executive, Tony Gorant.
The Tony Gorant Community Leadership Institute will involve 16 executives, directors and managers from Akron General, providing them a series of experiences that focus on community leadership. Participants will explore a range of topics including social services, economic health, healthy children and families, and healthy civic life. Participants will work with organizations that are best-in-class in these areas, drawing insights on community leadership and exploring how Akron General can better link with other organizations to benefit the community. Ann Otto, Ph.D., a member of Leadership Akron Alumni Association who specializes in organizational development and human resources consulting, will facilitate the Institute.
"This program emphasizes Akron General’s commitment to community service for our leadership," said Don Corpora, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for the Akron General Health System. “It will give participants a better understanding of our community and its resources.”
Following a 42-year career with Ohio Edison, Gorant spent 15 years as Senior Vice President of Community Affairs for Akron General Health System. His philanthropic and civic involvement were exemplary, and his leadership was central to Akron General’s advancement as a health care organization. A 1987 graduate of Leadership Akron’s third class, Gorant cared deeply about making the community a better place and encouraged others to do the same. The Institute will create a lasting legacy in recognition of Gorant’s dedication to Akron General and the Akron community.
Participating in the inaugural class will be Holly Reardon, Nancy Doolittle, Dave Fiser, Kim Strubel, Steve Bossart, Chris Hinman, Evelyn Burkhart, Steve Abdenour, Karen Mullen, Gary Tomcho, Dr. Todd Meyerhoefer, Susan Spencer, Lee Sahadi, Dr. Larry Emelhainz, Dr. David Peter and Carol Icsman. A 2004 graduate of Leadership Akron, Sue Hobson, Director of Community Health at Akron General and a member of the Institute's planning committee, will also attend the sessions to lend support.
