Akron General Gamma Knife Center Opens
Neuroscience Institute expands offerings

A new era of neuroscience care for the residents of Summit County and surrounding areas was recently ushered in as Akron General Health System began treating patients with its new Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion system. Akron General’s Gamma Knife Center is one of only five in the state of Ohio and the only one located between Cleveland and Columbus.

An alternative to the traditional surgical tools that neurosurgeons have historically used to remove cancerous tumors, the incisionless Gamma Knife radiosurgery system treats patients with brain and neck tumors using high doses of radiation to destroy cancer cells and shrink the tumors. Gamma Knife radiosurgery is able to accurately focus many beams of high-intensity gamma radiation to converge on one or more tumors. Each individual beam is of relatively low intensity, so the radiation has little effect on health brain tissue and is concentrated only on the tumor itself.

The Gamma Knife system is the latest in a number of recent advancements made at Akron General for neurosurgical or neurological care. A Neuro Intensive Care Unit – the first in Summit County – opened earlier this year at Akron General Medical Center. Four operating suites are being completely renovated and outfitted with the latest technology, including Brainsuite intraoperative MRI and intraoperative CT that will provide Akron General surgeons with precise and real-time anatomical information on the patient during delicate surgical procedures.

"Patients can now receive the highest quality care without ever having to leave this community," said Georges Z. Markarian, MD, a neurosurgeon and chair of Akron General’s new Neuroscience Institute. "Everything they need is right here, close to home."
