Akron General Medical Center nurses enjoy shared governance in hospital policy-making through these groups:
Nursing Council directs and coordinates nursing shared governance. The goal of Nursing Council is to provide a forum for effective communication and collaboration between nursing, medical, administrative and ancillary staff. The Council addresses issues from and refers issues to the other governance councils.
Practice Council directs and facilitates excellence in nursing practice. Practice Council members help design and facilitate changes and improvements in the practice of nursing. This Council reviews and revises nursing practice policies, procedures and forms.
Management Council coordinates the delivery of nursing care in all areas of the Medical Center. This Council develops and communicates organizational goals, objectives, new programs and strategic planning initiatives. This council monitors national healthcare trends and helps to identify and monitor Quality Management and PRO issues.
Education Council directs the development, coordination and implementation of educational programming for patients and staff. This Council identifies plans and evaluates educational offerings and resources for patients and staff.
Quality Management and Research Council oversees nursing quality assessment, improvement and nursing research. The goal of this Council is to facilitate improvement in quality and patient safety. This Council has an additional responsibility of assessing and evaluating indicator data related to nursing and patient care. Council members also promote the use of nursing research.
