PSYCHIATRY

ELECTIVE: Adult Psychiatry

Location: Akron General Medical Center

Duration: 4 Weeks

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Students will gain exposure to a wide variety of patients who are hospitalized during a life crisis. Under direct supervision of attending faculty, students will be invited to broaden and deepen their understanding of these patients by actively participating in their daily care, including medication management and psychotherapy.

  2. Students will be challenged to sharpen and improve their skills in eliciting patients’ stories, formulating diagnoses, interpreting nonverbal communication, and in creating intentionally therapeutic dialogue. These enhanced skills will become vital to the practice of any medical specialty.

DESCRIPTION:

  1. Students will be assigned to faculty at either Akron General or Summa. At Akron General supervisors include Drs. William Hartmann and Anthony Smartnick and at Summa Drs. David Deckert and Bradly Winkhart.

  2. Students will have the opportunity to participate and have responsibility in the diagnosis and treatment of adult psychiatry inpatients as well as potential involvement in emergency room evaluations, outpatient and possible intensive outpatient program treatment opportunities.
