Interventional Radiology is a
subspecialty offered by the Radiology Department
at Akron General Medical Center. Interventional
radiologists use X-ray images to guide their instruments
in a variety of minimally invasive procedures, which
often means reduced pain, less risk of complications
and reduced recovery time. Most procedures can be
performed on an outpatient basis and without general
anesthesia. Interventional radiologic procedures
are often more cost effective than traditional surgery.
During an interventional radiology
procedure, instruments attached to the end of a
catheter or thin flexible tube just a few millimeters
wide. The catheters are guided by X-ray, ultrasound,
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and CT (computed
tomography).
