Our Audiology Department is part of Edwin Shaw Rehab and is located on White Pond Drive in West Akron. Audiology, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy often work together to evaluate and treat patients with balance deficits, dizziness and vestibular problems. The unique arrangement means a greater continuity of care for patients.
Akron General's Audiology staff offers individual attention and professional support to those with hearing loss. We encourage family members and friends to participate in treatment, since hearing loss involves both the listener and the speaker.
The first step is to determine whether a hearing problem exists and to identify the source and severity of the problem. A complete evaluation consists of responding to tones and words, a check of the middle ear system and a check of inner ear function.
When your tests are completed, we will discuss your results with you to help you understand your problem. We may recommend that you see your physician, either to treat a medical problem or to obtain medical clearance for fitting of a hearing aid. If the loss is not severe enough for a hearing aid, suggestions for developing new visual and listening skills will be discussed.
When a hearing aid is recommended, Audiology Services can prescribe, dispense and instruct patients to achieve the most benefits from various listening situations. We also offer service and repair to maintain hearing instruments.
