Breast
Surgery is usually the first-line treatment for breast cancer. Surgeons, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists work together to ensure the most comprehensive care for our patients. Surgical breast cancer options at Akron General Medical Center include lumpectomy, mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. These can be combined with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy and various combinations of therapies.
Akron General's McDowell Cancer Center is now offering an innovative therapy that combines lumpectomy with a radiation technique. It's called MammoSite Radiation Therapy System (MammoSite RTS®) and involves only partial breast irradiation. After removal of the tumor, treatment is delivered right to the cancer site through a radioactive "seed," a method called brachytherapy. This type of technique has been used to treat prostate cancer for many years, but is now offering good results for breast cancer patients and a reduced treatment time. Cleared for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2002, the treatment is appropriate for patients without lymph node involvement.
