General Surgery Residency Program

The first year is devoted to the principles of patient care as they apply to general surgery. Residents rotate on the major surgical subspecialties with emphasis on preoperative and postoperative management and the development of differential diagnosis.

The second and third year include subspecialty rotations in transplantation, urology, neurosurgery and plastic surgery. Third year is divided among pediatric and burn surgery, surgical critical care and thoracic/vascular. Our pediatric surgery rotation is done at Akron Children's Hospital, the ninth largest children's hospital in the country. Between the second and third year, an optional year of research is provided, which may be done at a national recognized laboratory, the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy, or our departmental hospital-based fully equipped and staffed research laboratory.

The final two years are devoted to general surgery where the resident functions at the chief resident level.

Throughout the entire five years we offer broad exposure in trauma, emergency surgery and surgical critical care. We are one of the regions Level I Trauma Centers as verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

Our conferences and teaching rounds stress the application of basic science as it applies clinically. Our curriculum integrates anatomy, physiology and clinical pathology. Morbidity and Mortality Conferences are held weekly and Surgical Grand Rounds follow this mandatory conference. Our residents receive extensive laparoscopic experience.
