Thank you for your interest in General Surgery Residency program at Akron General Medical Center in Akron, Ohio. Ours is a five or six year program with two categorical positions per year. The additional year incorporates a year of research, done here or at other major research centers across the country.
Our department’s mission is to equip the graduating residents with all the necessary skills for the broadest possible range of clinical surgical activities. Historically, our residents have gone into solo and group practice, multi-specialty practice groups, and full-time teaching and academic positions. They carry extensive administrative and research responsibilities in positions across the United States.
For the past 13-years, Akron General Medical Center has been verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level I Trauma Center. Accordingly, our resident trauma experience is substantial.
Our Cancer program is fully approved by the American College of Surgeons Commissions on Cancer and we actively participate in many different national research protocols. The Cancer program recently received a Commendation report from the verifying body of the American College of Surgeons.
Additionally, our department offers a Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship. This PGY VI position offers the interested surgical resident an intensive one-year fellowship concentrating in both benign and malignant breast disease. This program is done in conjunction with Terry Mamounas, MD at Aultman Health Foundation in Canton, Ohio.
All of our faculty members are proud of our program and our graduates. We welcome your interest and look forward to meeting you personally.
Most Sincerely,
