"Starting residency is tough. Starting residency with three kids is crazy! That’s the situation that I found myself in coming out of medical school. Not only had to find the residency that fit me best, but that fit my family as well. I knew that I wanted a family friendly program but I didn’t want to sacrifice my training to do it. I found the perfect fit at Akron General. The OB/GYN program has the procedure and surgical numbers to rival any program in the country. The attendings and teaching staff are fully dedicated to making sure that we have the best education. Every resident that leaves can feel confident that they can handle any situation no matter where they end up. And even with the fantastic training, there is still time for family. I couldn’t find any program that rivaled their benefits, which has been a lifesaver for us. And when the kids of our residents now out number the residents themselves, you know the program has a fantastic reputation for being family friendly. I was lucky enough to join the OB/GYN program at Akron General"

"I applied to Akron General from my medical school in Arizona. I had never heard of Akron before a close friend who went to Ohio State matched in a local orthopaedics program a year ahead of me. In my application process, I ended up applying to Akron General because of my friend’s recommendation of the area. I specifically put Akron General as my last spot in the interview trail because I thought there was a small chance of ending up at Akron General. As the interview date approached, my wife and I argued because she didn’t want to "waste" the travel money for the interview when I knew I could match in the West. After talking to the OB/GYN residents before my interview, I knew I wanted to see the program and ended up coming for the interview. The rest is history."
After interviewing here, it changed my entire rank order list. Our numbers speak for themselves. The male-to-female ratio was important to me. Especially important was the emphasis on resident families; nine out of sixteen residents currently have kids. Because of this, my wife has a strong support system for our two kids. Also important was the benefits package. Fully paid medical/dental really makes the monthly budget doable, especially with the competitive salary and low cost of living. Supportive attendings expect you to be the best and will help you succeed. As residents, we are close friends inside and outside of residency. This helps make the long hours possible."
In short, Akron General was a hidden gem that I didn’t see myself at until my interview. Now that I am here, I would not choose to go anywhere else. I have full confidence that my training will not only get me past my board exams, but also help excel as an attending."
