Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Vice-President, Nursing and a standard care arrangement with an identified Akron General physician, the Nurse Practitioner Short Term Observation collaborates with medical staff and other clinical disciplines to provide and direct patient care for those patients designated as outpatients in an observational status. The NP provides primary care from assignment of STO status until discharge in collaboration with the attending physician. The NP also coordinates care with the assistance of nursing personnel, procedural departments, and the attending physician.
Job Duties:
Collaborates with the Emergency Department in the identification of patients for STO status.
Completes History and Physical on STO patients as needed.
Provides appropriate order set to facilitate timely STO intake and initiation of care.
Provides orders and a care path that reflect appropriate lab and testing procedures to facilitate prompt diagnosis and decision making in accordance with STO status.
Engages in effective and efficient written and oral communication regarding patient needs and findings to all necessary disciplines, including the attending physician, to achieve positive short term observation outcomes.
Organizes the discharge findings and requirements to facilitate prompt discharge when diagnosis and decision-making are complete.
Provides direction to the patient regarding post-discharge needs and instructions as necessary.
Participates in patient care activities based on need and complexity.
Assists in the development of policies, procedures, standards of practice, and care management protocols as they relate to the STO patient.
Participates in STO quality monitoring activities.
Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure.
Follows hospital and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety.

Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Ohio.
National Certification from the American Nurses' Credentialing Center.
Prescriptive Authority required.
Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary health care team.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
