Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Manager, Surgical Services and the Director, Surgical Services, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible for obtaining the initial history, performing a physical exam, and evaluating operative risk factors for pre-surgical patients. The Nurse Practitioner provides direct patient care and education and serves as a resource person to other members of the health care team.
Job Duties:
Assesses patient's health status by conducting an interview with the patient, family or significant other. Utilizes skills of inspection, auscultation, percussion and palpation during the physical exam. Differentiates normal and abnormal. Notifies attending surgeon of findings needing attention preoperatively. Performs and completes History and Physical when appropriate.
Actively participates in direct patient care while maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for patients.
Serves as a liaison between the patient, attending physician, anesthesia department and other members of the health care team. Identifies problems or potential problems and initiates appropriate actions.
Initiates routine standing orders or protocols as approved by medical staff/department of anesthesia.
Provides pre and post-operative patient education.
Assists with pre-operative phone calls for screening and education of pre-op patients.
Follows through with physician offices/anesthesia regarding abnormal findings from the pre-op screening process.
Reviews pre-operative patient charts for completeness of tests, requirements, and orders prior to the day of surgery.
Assists in pre-surgical areas, and other clinical areas, if necessary.
Functions efficiently with computerized charting.
Collaborates with others to ensure the timely submission of charges.
Follows system and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety.
Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure. Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
Age Specific Criteria:
Adolescent: Plans individualized care for adolescent based on assessment of physical, psychological and age specific needs.
Adolescent: Assures plan and implementation of care addresses adolescent needs for privacy and involvement in decision making.
Adolescent: Educates adolescent and parents as appropriate, regarding therapy, procedures and treatment using understandable terminology.
Geriatric: Assesses and plans care appropriately for age related changes in visual acuity, strength, hearing, memory and sensation.
Geriatric: Demonstrates knowledge of potential variation in effect of medications in geriatric patient and plans care accordingly.
Geriatric: Provides education about therapy and treatment in understandable terms, providing patient opportunity and adequate time, to involve family in decision-making.
Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:
Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program and currently licensed to practice in the State of Ohio. Certificate of Authority to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner. Three to five years experience as a registered nurse in a surgical or ambulatory setting. Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred. Demonstrated leadership ability. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with members of the health care team. Proficient in the use of administrative and clinical software applications.
