Edwin Shaw offers aquatic therapy for rehabilitation

As our region’s most accredited rehabilitation facility, Edwin Shaw Rehab offers extensive services for orthopaedic surgery patients recovering from arthritis and other degenerative joint diseases, along with those recovering from stroke, head injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations, neuromuscular disorders, multiple traumas and related disorders.

Among these services is aquatic therapy. Therapy performed in warm water offers a wide variety of benefits for patients with limited weight-bearing ability, including those with rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, low back pain, fractures, hip and knee surgery, back surgery or trauma of the lower extremities. Because water reduces the effect of weight bearing, patients with these conditions rehabilitate more quickly.

Proven benefits of aquatic therapy include reduction of pain, muscle relaxation, decreased muscle spasms – and improvement in flexibility, range of motion, circulation, cardiovascular endurance and balance. The added patient comfort from the support of water often makes it possible to work on several issues simultaneously, such as strengthening, conditioning, flexibility and pain relief.

Aquatic therapy at Edwin Shaw includes one-on-one and small-group treatments at both its main campus in Lakemore and through its outpatient center in Hudson. For more information on this and other Edwin Shaw Rehab services, call 330-784-1271, ext. 5205, or visit www.edwinshaw.com.

Akron General Sports & Physical Therapy also offers aquatic therapy rehabilitation and classes at its Health & Wellness Center – West location. For more information, call 330-665-8200, or visit www.akrongeneral.org and click on Orthopaedic & Rehab under Centers of Excellence.
