National Comparison Project In 2006, Akron General Medical Center will join the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), a quality assurance program offered by the American College of Surgeons. Through this program, real-time data is gathered from multiple participating hospitals, so that 30-day risk-adjusted surgical outcomes can be compared. Gathering data and benchmarking with similar facilities is vital to the assessment of the quality of surgical care.
Currently 78 major hospitals in the United States and three hospitals in Canada are participating in the NSQIP program. Beginning February 6, 2006, Akron General will begin collecting real time data for Vascular and General Surgery cases.
Mortality, complication rates, symptom relief, return to work or play, and patient satisfaction are all measured through the NSQIP program.
