Akron General Medical Center will celebrate the Great American Smoke Out on Thursday, November 15, from 7:30 a.m. to noon in the hospital's main lobby at 400 Wabash Avenue, Akron. Informational resources for individuals who want to quit smoking or for those wishing to help a friend become tobacco-free will be offered. The event is open to the public, as well as Akron General employees.
Helpful information will be provided from exhibitors including Akron General's Heart and Vascular Center and the McDowell Cancer Center, as well as Pfizer, Summit County Tobacco Prevention Coalition and the American Cancer Society. Akron General's Respiratory Care Department will provide free pulmonary function screenings. Cope kits to help smokers stave off the cravings will also be available.
During the event, interested individuals may enroll in a free Smoking Cessation program, presented by Kathy McCown, Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute Respiratory Therapist. McCown is also a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Classes will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, November 20 – December 18 in the Akron General Heart and Vascular Center. An additional class will be held on December 13. Registration for the classes is available by calling 330.344.2462.
