Earlier this month, Akron General’s McDowell Cancer Center began offering a low-cost lung cancer screening for eligible patients using low-dose CT scanning of the chest. Recent guidelines issued by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network point out that low-dose CT scans may identify lung cancers at an earlier stage and, consequently, may permit earlier intervention and improved survival.
The lung cancer screening process for the patient is simple. Those interested should follow these guidelines:
- All patients need an order from a referring physician.
- Patients may be scheduled by calling 330-344-LUNG (5864).
- Fee for the screening charge is $89 and is due at the time of service.
- Patients appropriate for the screening should meet ALL of the following criteria*:
- Age between 55 and 74 years
- History of cigarette smoking of at least one-pack per day for 30 years
- If a former smoker, smoking cessation within the previous 15 years* Patient selection criteria are based on the National Lung Screening Trial
Results will be sent to the referring physician and will be communicated to the patient by Akron General’s Cancer Care Coordinator. A positive screening study will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary lung cancer team, which will ensure timely follow up with the patient for further discussion within 24-48 hours.
For additional information, please call 330-344-LUNG (5864).
