Obesity is more than a weight issue – it’s health issue with long-term effects, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke and certain types of cancer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 35 percent of Americans are obese and that percentage is projected to grow over the next few years.
A wide range of factors can contribute to obesity, including medical conditions, lifestyle habits and environmental influences. Similarly, treatment should involve a multi-dimensional approach that addresses each patient’s individual circumstances. If you or someone you love are considering weight loss options, make plans to attend one of Akron General’s free public information sessions:
· January 22, at 6 p.m. in the main board room at Akron General Medical Center, 400 Wabash Ave., Akron;
· January 29, at 6 p.m. in the board room at Lodi Community Hospital, 225 Elyria Street, Lodi; or
· February 19, at 6 p.m. at Akron General Medical Center.
Led by surgeon and Bariatric Center Medical Director Walter Chlysta, MD, FACS, each session will give an overview of the different types of weight-loss surgeries offered, who may qualify and the support provided by Akron General’s Bariatric Center before and after surgery. In addition, attendees will hear about the patient journey first-hand from post-operative patients. There is no cost to attend, but registration is appreciated and can be completed by calling 330-344-2462 or by registering online at akrongeneral.org/obesity.
