Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) continues to transform its grounds with more than $160 million in campus expansion efforts that include a research and graduate education building, residential housing, and the announcement of a health, wellness and medical education complex.
The health, wellness and medical education complex, a 177,338-square-foot structure that will house numerous community-facing services such as fitness and pool facilities, conference and catering services, and retail entities, is being constructed by Signet Development, an Akron-based developer who is also responsible for the Village at NEOMED, the University’s first-ever on-campus residential housing.
Along with the developer, the University has announced the first two tenants who intend to lease space in the complex—Integrated Wellness Partners, a joint venture between Akron General Health System and Signet Enterprises, which plans to establish a medical fitness center open to NEOMED students, faculty and staff as well as the community, and Akron General Health System, which plans to offer physical therapy and warm water therapy services.
“Our campus is transforming to meet the current and future needs of our students, employees, communities and beyond, and we couldn’t be happier to announce the support and collaboration of several local partners as we head into the final component of this tremendous growth and expansion,” said Jay A. Gershen, D.D.S., Ph.D., president of NEOMED. “Our mission of education, research and service finds home in our new health, wellness and medical education complex, and we thank Signet, Akron General and Integrated Wellness Partners for joining us to improve the health, economy and quality of life in Northeast Ohio.”
The final facility will house a fitness center, pools, therapy services, classroom and lecture hall space, a retail pharmacy, primary care offices, eateries and other retail services. It will also become the home of the University’s existing Ralph Regula Conference & Event Center as well as Bio-Med Science Academy, the rural STEM+M school located on the University’s campus.
“We are truly honored to be a part of the extraordinary campus transformation at NEOMED,” said Tony Manna, chairman of Signet Enterprises, LLC and Integrated Wellness Partners, LLC. “And our team is delighted to collaborate with the University on a project that will enrich the academic experience for NEOMED students, enhance the delivery of health care services for the community, and create a hub of activity on-campus for all of Portage County. This project will encourage wellness, spur innovation, and provide NEOMED with a world-class facility that will enhance its competitive position in the market for decades to come.”
The collaboration between the partners demonstrates their shared initiatives to serve the needs of the local communities, the region and beyond.
“Akron General has prided itself for many years as being the area’s clear leader in health and wellness services for the communities we serve,” said Thomas L. “Tim” Stover, M.D., president and CEO of Akron General. “This latest partnership with NEOMED is a natural result of our strategy to broaden the geographic reach of our health and wellness programs.”
The health, wellness and medical education complex will be constructed on the east side of campus along State Route 44 and will connect with the existing facility. It is slated for completion in summer 2014 following the completion of the research and graduate education building (summer 2013) and residential housing village (fall 2013).
