Diabetes rates in our country have climbed so much that the disease is now being called an epidemic. In fact, approximately eight percent of the United States population has diabetes –and 18.8 million people have been diagnosed with the disease. In addition, 79 million people are classified as pre-diabetic.
Knowing what to eat, how to prepare food and what to choose when dining out can be a challenge for individuals with diabetes and those who cook for and dine with them. That’s why Akron General offers Dining With Diabetes, a two-part cooking series for those with diabetes or people who are interested in how to cook for someone with diabetes. Dining With Diabetes incorporates cooking demonstrations, taste testing and healthy meal planning, all presented by certified diabetes educators and a professional chef.
Akron General’s Dining With Diabetes will be held September 11 and 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Akron General Medical Center, Frasche Classroom, 400 Wabash Avenue, Akron. Cost is $10 for the program. Register by calling 330-344-2462.
