Akron General Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service (VNS) will hold volunteer training classes on October 1 and 8 from 5–9 p.m. at the Hospice of VNS Care Center, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Copley. Participants are required to both sessions to complete training. There is no fee. Please register by September 20.
Volunteers are a crucial part of the hospice team that provides care for every hospice patient. They enhance the lives of patients and their families by providing companionship and support, such as sitting vigil beside a patient’s bed so a family member can rest, or reading aloud to a patient. They also assist with clerical work, make crafts for patient trays, and even weed gardens at the Hospice of VNS Care Center.
There is a specific need for volunteers to visit hospice patients in their homes or skilled nursing facilities throughout Summit, Medina, Portage and northern Stark Counties, as well as to assist with important functions at the Hospice of VNS Care Center, such as visiting patients, greeting families, clerical projects, fundraising and gardening (April – October). Hospice of VNS matches volunteer interests with program needs.
Volunteers receive comprehensive training covering such topics as the physical and emotional needs of patients and caregivers, spiritual aspects of care, the Hospice concept, comfort care issues, communications skills, active listening, and all aspects of death, dying, and grief and bereavement. New volunteers to the program are mentored by seasoned volunteers.
